All of us have seen puppy dogs react when you pick up their leash. Their tails start to wag, they jump up and down, and it seems a smile crosses their faces! Well the same can be said for your photographer when they pick up their camera. The thought of a perfect session brings a paroxysm of happiness. With a few helpful hints, you can keep that puppy as happy throughout the entire walk!
First, you must know how you are feeling. Talk about your day and let your photographer in on your feelings. This builds rapport with your picture taker and lets them know you are human to your very core, as they are. Talk about your best angle, your favorite expression, etc. When shown a screen shot of one of your photos, share your feelings about how you look. Talk builds trust, and that has to work both ways. As the photographer sets their equipment, ask questions about what they are using. This will relax both you and your image maker, as they are telling you about their setup.
When you walk your puppy, you decide the direction. The same is true for your photo session. You know what you need out of it, and let the person with the camera know what you expect. They can then have a better idea of what poses and locations to suggest. Your goals for the session and your career will guide the session, as the photographer takes the lead in creation of the images. The more they know about you, the better the images will look.
Smiling and laughing are the essence that you need to create great work. Great photos take work, and if you both put in the effort it will come in time. Just like caring for a new puppy, your photographer will be very appreciative of the effort. That is what it takes to create beautiful and long remembered images.
